pakeha - non-Maori person
whanau - family
kai - food
marae - place for Maori functions, like a community centre

NZ English - English
jandals - flip flops
rubbish - trash / garbage
motorway - freeway
wop wops - isolated part of the country
bach - small holiday home, pronounced "batch"
tramping - hiking
biscuit - cookie
boot - car trunk
brekkie - Short for 'breakfast'
chips - french fries
jumper - woollen sweater
choice - very good
crook - sick, unwell
dairy - "corner" store
footpath - pavement or sidewalk
take-aways - "take-outs" or food "to go"
ground floor - first floor
lolly - candy
metal road - a country road (usually) with a gravel or shingle surface
rellies - family, relatives
