OFFICIAL COUNTRY NAME: Kingdom of Denmark (Kongeriget Danmark). CAPITAL: Copenhagen (København). POPULATION: 5.38 million. TELEPHONE CODE: UK to Denmark 00-45-number. For other countries, dial your country's international access code, then: 45. TIME ZONE: GMT + 1 hour. AREA: 43,094 sq km. LANGUAGES(s): Danish. (English is the predominant second language). German (smaller minority). ETHNIC GROUPS: Scandinavian, Inuit, Faroese, German, Turkish, Iranian, Somali. HIGHEST MOUNTAIN: Yding Skovhøj at 173 metres, near Viborg in Jutland. (I think, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong). HEAD OF STATE/PRIME MINISTER: Queen Margrethe II (chief of state since 1972). Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen (head of government since 2001). GOVERNMENT: constitutional monarchy. CURRENCY: krone (crown), which is made up of 100 øre. Coins - 25 øre, 50 øre, 1 krone, 2 kroner, 5 kroner, 10 kroner and 20 kroner. Notes - 50, 100, 200, 500 and DKK 1,000. Some places will accept the euro and price tag goods in shops are often priced in both. EXCHANGE RATE: 1 euro = DKK 7.44. The exact rate of exchange can be found in most daily newspapers or travel agents. Yahoo also has a good currency converter. HEALTH RISKS: no major risks. ELECTRICITY: 220-volt AC, 50Hz current. Danes use two-pin continental plugs. UK visitors will need an adaptor for electric appliances. North Americans need a transformer to use their 110/125v appliances. WEIGHTS & MEASURES: Metric.
