The city of Galati is situated not far from the worldwide famous Danube Delta, a unique place in Europe due to its flora and fauna.
With about 400,000 inhabitants, Galati is the 5-th greatest city of Romania. The inhabitants are mostly Romanian, Orthodox Christian.
The climate is of continental type, with hot dry summers and windy winters. Due to this climate the wine yards in the county of Galati offer some of Romania's finest wines.

Galati has also become an important cultural centre. Museums, theatres and other cultural sites can be visited at Galati.
Galaţi has a fine 17th century Eastern Orthodox cathedral - St. George (Sfântu Gheorghe), and another particularly striking fortified church (that of St. Mary - Sf. Precista) on the banks of the Danube (legend has it that a tunnel was dug from the church and under the river).
