Basic Facts

The information below seems to be about Germany!!!!!!!! Not AMSTERDAM Exchanging Money

Since Germany uses the Euro as a main currency there is not much to exchange. But if you need to exchange money, it is always better (cheaper) to bring foreign currency into the country, than to exchange it before you leave.

There are lots of "Wechselstuben" (Exchange booths) scattered all around the city, most of them -of course- near the Hauptbahnhof (main rail station) and the other big stations (Altona, Harburg, etc), and the airport.

Costs

As a general rule: The further north you travel, the cheaper your daily life also becomes. Expect to pay 6-15€ for a meal at a restaurant, depending on what you eat, drinks etc. not included.

There are lots of small "fast food" stores that sell Döner, burgers, fried sausages with fries etc. Most of them do not franchise though, so you won't find exactly the same menus everywhere. But you can get a decent lunch for 4€ at e.g. a take-away indian or chinese place.

In general, food is cheaper in Germany than e.g. in France (especially the big cities), but not quite as cheap as e.g. in Greece or (I'm told) Italy.

Buying food

Watch out: The Ladenschlussgesetz mandates that most shops (supermarkets and malls) have to close at 8pm and may not open on Sundays. If you need something to eat at night or on Sundays, you can go to any gas station, they usually carry a fair amount of general-purpose food too, but are more expensive. If you can, always go to a discount supermarket (Aldi, Minimal, Lidl, Penny, etc).

Attractions and Things to See and Do

Things to see and do in Amsterdam
1) the neighbourhood Jordaan with canals and little shops and bars 2) go on a boat trip, the boats are next to central station and like this you pass all the nice canals 3) rent a bike (also close to central station, Mc Bike) 4) the Museumplein (Museum Square) with the beautiful buildings of the Rijksmuseum, van Gogh museum and the Concerthall. 5) the Vondelpark (the biggest park in Amsterdam) 6) Nieuwmarkt (close to the red light district and full of bars and restaurants)

Off the Beaten Path and Insider Tips

Go where the locals go: - avoid the vondelpark and go to the westerpark - if you have seen the markets in the beautiful Jordaan, go for a change to the exotic and multicultural foodmarket in the Bijlmer. Many guests I have want to visit the Anne Frankhuis. Please note that this house is a replica and not the place where she lived. Outside there are always (even early in the morning) very long lines. I would like to suggest people who are interested in ww2 and the "jewish situation" in it to go to the "hollandse schouwburg". This is the place where the jewish people(a.o.)were brought to in ww2 before they were transported to the camps. It is open from 11 until 4pm and has an excellent exhibition on the holocaust.

For free and fast internet, go to the new public library of Amsterdam! It's just east of the Central Station (behind the chinese floating restaurant) and it's open from 10.00 to 22.00 every day. While you're there, you should also check out the view on the top floor where they have a La Place restaurant where you can go for a nice soup or sandwhich and enjoy the view over Amsterdam.

One large event in Holland and especially Amsterdam is Queensday. It's the celebration of our late Queen mother the 30th of April. Everybody enjoys a day off from work. People walk around in orange clothing and sell their goods and old stuff on the streets. Children play music and try to earn a dime. People make up funny games (about the royal family). In 2006 this celebration is held om the 29th of April. More information on events you can find on www.amsterdamtourist.nl
