Here you can include references to maps that are somewhere on the internet. Two conditions apply: they cannot be protected by copyright, (or you have to make sure that we are allowed to use them), and you have to make sure that it is ok if we call them up from here. If that is a problem, you can also send us the image file and we will upload it to our server.

This site contains an interactive map of Moldova with lots of tourist attractions: Also travel routes through Moldavian wineries are available.

Suggested Itineraries

1 Day, 1 Week, 2 Weeks, 1 Month ...

Getting there and away There are busses to some destinations in Western Europe which go at least once a week, and planes to Poland, Austria Ukraine...
Getting around by Air,
Bus The system of busses and minibusses(maxitaxis, marschrutkas) is quite well established but I suppose to read: "Tony Hawks: Playing the Moldovans at Tennis" to be sure you won't be surprised!,
Car It is possible but be aware of the Moldovan style of driving, cars, roads, and police officers!
Hitchhiking I heard of a boy who did it from north to south, but didn't try myself, yet - but normally you are charged at least the price of the bus ticket!,
Bicycle ...

Money and Costs

Currency, Exchanging Money, Credit Cards, Tipping, Bargaining, Costs... The Moldovan Leu (pl. Lei, means Lion(s)), shortly MDL, is the quite instabile currency of Republic of Moldova.
As many Moldovans work abroad and send money home, there are very many exchanges in the capital Chisinau - but watch out, some put a simple 0 between two numbers to confuse you!
Credit cards are excepted in many modern shops.
The costs in Moldova are at the moment approximately one fifth of those I got to know in Germany, though Chisinau is the most expensive part of the country.
The whole facts do not count for the part of Moldova situated on the left (Eastern) side of the Dnestr! Transnistria has its own money, worthless everywhere outside!

Visa and Documents and Embassies

Since 1 january 2007 the EU citizens dont need visa to enter in Moldova, also dont need visa citizens of Canada, Japan, Iceland, Norway, Swiss Confederation, USA. They could stay without visa in Moldova up to 90 days. More info on

Moldovan Embassies exist in following states:
Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, USA

In Chisinau there are (among others) Embassies of follwing states:
Bulgaria (Str 31 August); China; France and Ukraine (Str Sfatul Tarii); Germany (Str Maria Cibotari); Hungary and Russia (Bld Stefan cel Mare); Romania (Str Bucuresti); Turkey and USA (Str Anton Mateevici)

Questions and Answers or Forum

I am going to be visiting Moldova soon and was wondering what would be the best language to learn (at least survival things anyway) Moldovian/Rumanian or Russian?

Hospitality Club Meetings

Use this section to add more info if you organize meetings and events (you can add a short note on the main country page). You can also invite other members to parties, sports events, whenever you would like to meet up with someone.

My current life here with as much stories as possible is available at: in German and (a not perfect) English. Sorry but it's too long to paste it here!
On this site you can find at least two more travelogues: search for member "tina" or "conrad". Unfortunately for many, both of them are only in German :(

Here you can include photos that are hosted somewhere on the internet. As with maps, you have to make sure that it is ok for us to use the photos here (so they should be either your photos, or you should ask the owner), and that it is allright to call them up from here.

Activities and Sports

Nightlife and Entertainment

Bars, Cafes, Discos, Cinemas... The place for Westerners who miss their home is definitely the underground bar "The Black Elephant" near the Stefan cel Mare Bld. The prices are quite western, too. Anyway, this club plays really great music, has a nice atmosphere and even a library and some guests from abroad, especially when there is one of the great concerts, mostly saturdays.
Nice is the way of eating in the small self service restaurants, the most likely to see for foreigners is surely that on Pushkin Str. Anyway, watch what you're choosing, even more on the markets!
Searching for a cinema without Russian synchronisation? Every Friday the Alliance Francaise shows a French film at 6pm, for free!
A good place to rock is the discothece La Victor, likely to play fast music.
