Maps

Here you can include references to maps that are somewhere on the internet. Two conditions apply: they cannot be protected by copyright, (or you have to make sure that we are allowed to use them), and you have to make sure that it is ok if we call them up from here. If that is a problem, you can also send us the image file and we will upload it to our server.

Money and Costs

Currency, Exchanging Money, Credit Cards, Tipping, Bargaining, Costs...: Currency: At the moment there are 2 currenies actual in Mada. The new "aiary" (2500 Ar ~ 1€) is at the moment replacing the habitual "Franc Madagache" (12500 FMG ~ 1€). Pay attention with the banknotes ... they are similar but not the same value. The tricky thing is - in bigger villages and cities they think always in FMG and at the country side in Ar. Why? Infrastructure and communication doesnt permit an equal distribution of the currency. So pay attention by negociations - always ask with value they mean. Exchanging: Best conditions at the airport. Caution at the blackmarket, and you will be asked often. Travellerchecks - good idea but ... in mada you need to show your FACTURE of the checks, to prove that it was you who bought the checks ... if not they wound be exchanged, except in the american express office in Tana ... new orders after a big fraud in mada with travellerchecks. Credit cards: Visa is for mada the best option ... works nearly everythere. Mastercard is bad choise - only in the BOA "Bank of Africa" with nearly a delay of 1 day it works ... max. amount till 400000 Ar.

Visa and Documents and Embassies

Who needs a visa? How to get it? Embassies & Consulates, of the country abroad and in the country: Anyone who is not a malagacy citizen needs a visa, in generel there 2 visas available - for 1 month and for 3 months (35€ in the embassy of La Reunion). Before visa, or afterwards that is the question? At the entry of the country you can buy the visa also at the airport. Just under one condition - before you come to Mada you have to show your detourticket ... Inform yourself in advance - many countries, like austria, don t have embassies there.
