Basic Facts

Population: around 100,000 Altitude:from 30 m in the Emajõgi river valley to 76 m. Telephone Code: City Name for estonians has always been Tartu, but germans called it Dorpat, Jurjev was the official name during russification period 19/20 cent.

Attractions and Things to See and Do

Tartu is an old university and Hanseatic city. Though most of it's older buildings have been destroyed in wars, there is still a lot to see. Universitas Tartuensis. There are two city regions of old(looking) wooden houses : Karlova and Supilinn. If you haven't walked around there, you haven't been in Tartu :) There's the town hall and the square with a fountain called "Kissing students". Here is a webcam focused on the square and as a bonus you get the weather predictions. There are many museums : National Museum, Toy museum, Zoology museum, Geology museum (both of the latter are situated in Vanemuise 46), Botanical garden etc. Often something happens in Tartu. Off the Beaten Path and Insider Tips

If you are looking for someone, I bet he/she is in Zavood : the bar where everyone goes. I know some people that practically live there. Friendly faces, good atmosphere. It's located on Lai street. Just follow the white rabbit :)

Suggested Itineraries and Walking Tours


Getting there and away, Getting around by Air, Train, Bus, Car, Motorcycle, Boat, Hitchhiking, Bicycle ... In Tartu, public transport means city buses. Buy a single ticket from any kiosk for 13 EEK (for students 8 EEK) or from the bus driver for 16 EEK.

Food and Drinks and Local Specialties

In Tartu, there are many good places where to eat, but choice depends of Your taste. You can see all good restaurants and cafes on the homepage: If You want to enjoy national-food and local specialties, You should go to Gunpowder Cellar (once it was ungerground cellar for gunpowder) or to Hansatall (hanseatic interior).

1 eur = 15,7 krons
Beer costs ~ 0.7 eur in shop, ~1,5eur in bar

Bars, Cafes, Discos, Cinemas... zavod welcomes all travellers til very late. until the sun's shining again in summer :) Club Tallinn is a nice place: Illusion: Mainstream place Atlantis: There are more, ask from local people! :)
