Basic Charakteristics

(The Moravian-Silesian Region's data valid as of June 30th 2005)

  • Area: 5 445 km2
  • Population - total: 1 251 883
  • Population density: 230 inhabitants per km2
  • Largest municipality in population terms: Ostrava, 310 741 citizens

As of January 1st 2005, pursuant to the Act. No. 387/2004 on shifted regional borders, the Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc Region's territory was modified, as follows: municipalities of Huzova, Norbercany and Moravsky Beroun and their territories became a part of the Olomouc Region.


3. NATURAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES

Landscape

  • Varied geographical features of the region
  • Massif of the Hruby Jesenik Mts. on the very west (including the highest peak of the region - Praded, 1492 m) - forests and tourism
  • Massif of the Beskydy Mts. on the south-east - forests and tourism
  • Gentle relief oh the Nizky Jesenik Mts. in the western part - agriculture, tourism
  • Lowland landscape of the Opava Plain and Ostrava Basin (including the lowest point of the region - outflow of Odra River from Czech territory, 198 m) in the middle - agriculture, industry, biggest towns, highest density of population
  • Moravian Gate - traditional transport connection with other Czech territory and southern Europe as well
  • Harmonic landscape of Odra River Basin - river, floodplain forests, ponds, wetland, fishing, tourism
  • Drainage area of Baltic Sea (major Odra River with tributaries of Opava, Ostravice and Olse Rivers), little parts on the south belong to drainage area of Black Sea

4. TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Moravian-Silesian Region is located on historical transport road in north-south direction (from Baltic area to the Mediterranean)

  • Main road line - road E 462 (I/48) Novy Jicin - Frydek-Mistek - Cesky Tesin (crossing on Poland)
  • Road I/11 Bruntal - Opava - Ostrava - Cesky Tesin - border on Slovakia
  • Road I/57 Opava - Krnov - Bartultovice (crossing on Poland)
  • Road R56 Ostrava - Frydlant nad Ostravici - direct line to the Beskydy Mts.
  • Highway D47 - Lipnik - Ostrava, to be opened on November 2008
  • Main border crossings:
    • On Poland: Cesky Tesin, Bohumin, Bartultovice
    • On Slovakia: Mosty u Jablunkova, Bumbalka

Railway transport

  • Main line - No. 270, part of 2nd corridor, Breclav - Prerov - Ostrava - Bohumin
  • No. 320 - Bohumin - Cesky Tesin - Slovak border - Kosice (Slovakia)
  • No. 316 and 310 - Ostrava - Opava - Bruntal - Olomouc
  • Main border crossings:
    • On Slovakia: Mosty u Jablunkova

  • The Ostrava-Mosnov International Airport - biggest regional airport in the Czech Republic, 3,600 m of runway for all aircraft categories

Waterway transport

  • Now there is not any waterway in the region, but there is a project of water connection of Odra and Danube River which would come through the region
