Panama is most famous for the Panama Canal. It is an amazing feat of engineering. It was started by the French in the late 1800s and finally completed by the U.S. Army's Corps of Engineers in 1914. Over 20,000 people died during the construction, most of them from Yellow Fever contracted through Mosquito bites. The Yellow Fever is gone but the Canal enables ships to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific in about 8 hours

Top Things to See and Do
You can visit the canal quite easily, at the Miraflores Locks just a few miles outside of the Capital city. There is a museum and an observation platform and an excellent restaurant where you can sit on a veranda and eat and drink as you watch the ships pass by just a few feet away..
