Outdoor activities are primary around here - rafting on the Yoshino River, hiking, camping, etc. Also, a variety of local events - movies, concerts, festivals, kids' sports games, etc. (not all at once, but there's generally *something* going on. If you're interested in culture - taiko drumming, martial arts, ikebana flower arranging, etc I can probably arrange a chance to either observe or participate. It's a small town (4,200 pop.), but you'll be adopted by the locals if you give them half a chance!
