Leitrim(Contae Liatroma) has the smallest population in all of Ireland. It is not an easy place to live in in terms of access to large shops and wild nightlife but it is one of the most unspoilt areas in Ireland and western Europe.
Tá níos lú daoine i gContae Liatroma (thart ar 25,000) ná i gcontae ar bith eile in Éirinn.
The River Shannon and Lough Allen divide Leitrim into North and South. The landscape of Leitrim is dramatic. Valleys, waterfalls, hills, mountains, green fields are all abundant here.
The county town is Carrick-on-Shannon. Just to fathom how peaceful Leitrim was; in 2003 the first sets of traffic lights in Leitrim were installed at a pedestrian crossing in Carrick-on-Shannon.
There are many traditional music seisiuns in small bars around the county.
Top Things to See and Do
The salmon river at the Drowes of Tullaghan. Tullaghan is very near Bundoran, Co. Donegal.
Costello chapel, Carrick-on-Shannon, is the smallest chapel in Europe and the second smallest in the world. The chapel was commissioned by Edward Costello in memory of his deceased wife.
Parkes Castle, a former stronghold of the O Rourkes of Breffni, is now a musuem. It is by Lough Gill and Melvin.
The Shannon Erne Waterway, which is the longest inland waterway in Europe, runs through Leitrim.
Sean Mac Diarmada´s homestead in Kiltyclogher is open to visitors by arrangement. He was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916.
Kinlough Folk Museum, Drumkeeran Heritage Centre, Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre, Lough Rynn Estate, Swan Island Open Farm, Narrow Gauge Railway with steam trains.....There is plenty to see and do in Leitrim.
There are so many beautiful lakes in Leitrim; Lough Allen, Lough Melvin, Lough Gill, Lough Garadice, Lough Glenade, Lough Rynn and Lough MacNean. Please respect the environment there. Do not litter. It is one of the cleanest and most beautiful counties in Ireland and one of the most beautiful places in Europe.
