Cyprus is a small island in the far-east corner of the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. The population is around 800,000 people and the climate ranges between 12-15 degrees during the winter seasons and up to 42 degrees in the summertime. The island’s history is marked by a series of conquerors that throughout the centuries influenced the character of the land and the destiny of its people.
…Nowadays, Cyprus is a safe country with a flourishing economy, although its capital city, Nicosia, remains divided. Since 1974 18% of the island (north part) is under Turkish occupation and the “Cypriot Problem” is yet to be solved. South Cyprus(including the north part) entered the European Community on May 2004 and in 2007 the euro was introduced.
When in Cyprus expect most people to be speaking fluent English, we were afterall a British colony up until our independence in the 1960s. Cypriots are hospitable people although often enough they prove to be xenophobic and closed-minded. It is a rather small community, however, things are positively changing and there is always some good person to prove everyone else wrong.
The more you move towards the outskirts and the mountain villages, both the mentality and the attitude changes, but overall, there are many things to see and do whilst here: the sun, the sea, the food and the late night-life all make Cyprus a very popular destination. I would recommend a visit during summer or early Autumn- when the weather is still perfect but not too hot. Either that or try coming during the Easter festivities (don’t mix it with the Catholic Easter. Not all dates clash) because there are some lovely traditional celebrations going on.

More information: Unfortunately, Cyprus caters more for the package tourist than the independent traveller, however I have seen experimental proof that it is possible to enjoy Cyprus in this way if you are willing to expend a little more energy than is required in a typical European country. Be warned also that Cyprus is (I think) the most expensive Mediterranean country.
