Polish palms
A very p;d and essentially polish easter tradition is the custom of making palms commemorating Christ's entrance into Jerusalem. You can see a large variety of them at several local competitions. The highlanders are particulary fond of rivalling for the title od most beautiful palm, with the Tatra and Beskidy mountains boasting the most such contests. However, the longest-running is held the village of Lyse in the Kurpie region. Although the Kurpie palms are shorter than those in the mountains (normally from 5 to 10 meters), they are more colorful. They are constructed using hazel or young pine twings, around which is wound juniper, box, clubmoss and yew. The most decorative palm section is always its crest - with longer branches specially decorated with colorful flowers and tissue paper ribbons. Over 4000 palms over the years have been judged in the Kurpie competitions. The tallest palms are to be seen in Lipnica Murowana, in the Beskidy foothills, where the rivaly is always very dramatic. According to the rules, all palms should be presented by the contestants without cranes or order mechanical devices. And that isn't easy, as certain giants weigh over 100 kilograms, and frequently 'surfer injury' when being put into place; some break and fall to pieces. Lipnica's palms are ever more impressive and taller and taller each year. The record-holder two years ago was 25 meters tall, while last year's measured over 27. In 2005 a new record is likely to be set.
