Rotterdam is a dynamic city with an ever changing skyline. Not only its architecture is dynamic. Throughout the year festivals, concerts and lots of other cultural events are organised in our city.
Rotterdam has about 600.000 inhabitants and the second largest seaport in the world, which functions as an important transit point for goods transported between the European continent and other parts of the world. On the start of WWII Rotterdam was bombarded by the German Luftwaffe and the heart of the city was almost completely destroyed. From the fifties through the seventies of the 20th century the city was rebuilt, which resultetd in a windy, empty city with large boulevards.
But since the eighties Rotterdam developed into the city of architecture, with an imposing skyline of offices and luxury high-rises. In the nineties a new business center on the south bank of the river, the Kop van Zuid has been built.
Rotterdam is not only trend setting in architecture, but also in cultural life and has an increasingly sparkling nightlife. For summer festivals celebrating the city's multicultural population, you are in the right place here. Don't miss the Brasil-inspired 'Summer Carnival'. The well known museum Boymans-van Beuningen has recently been renovated. Also the Art Hall, the Historisch Museum, the Maritiem Museum and the Volkenkundig Museum (foreign peoples and cultures) are worth seeing.
