Greifswald is a north-eastern German town of about 55.000 inhabitants. It's inspiring with a vivid university of 11.000 students, at least in the period while lectures are running. (apr-jul, oct-feb) Especially in summer Greifswald turns out as beautiful city: sitting with icecream on the old marketplace, relaxing at the Baltic Sea beaches and taking delight in cultural events. The town center offers to see a lot of ancient "hanseatic" buldings: three churches made from red bricks in the 13th/14th century.(cathedral St.Nikolai, hall churches St.Mary and St.Jacob.)More historic monuments are merchant houses with nice ornated brick tracery on the front gable.(Two of them at the marketplace.) Germany's most famous landscapist of 19th century romanticism was born in Greifswald: Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). The place of his cradle (Lange Straße 54) houses a small showroom to Friedrich's lifetime and work. The picture gallery of the Museum of Pomeranian history (Pommersches Landesmuseum, adress: Rakower Straße) provides some of Friedrich's pictures. There can also be taken a look on van Gogh, Frans Hals and Philipp Otto Runge. Greifswald is a good base to do short trips to the beautiful islands Ruegen (30 km north) and Usedom (30km south-east), both with long, sandy beaches and Ruegen with a stunning cliff line of white rocks (Sassnitz).
