One of the most underestimated cities in Germany |
Well, maybe that`s a bit exaggerated, but people tend to, naturally, judge Hannover by what they see when they first arrive at the city, which is in most cases the city center (when you arrive by train, or with the tram from the airport). And that`s Hannovers main problem, some areas of the city center around the beautiful central train station are simply ugly (others definitely not!
But that must not keep you from exploring the rest of this beautiful city!
It`s not as much a city for sightseeing as for leisure time [so called Hangover]. The city is not too big, so the beautiful[!] parks are not too crowded, the Hannover zoo is one of the animal-friendliest in Europe, very beautiful and a must-do. There are several nice clubs and bars to go to, all reachable by tram or by walking and the people here are said to be more open to strangers than in bigger cities like Hamburg or Berlin.
[I myself never heard this to be said.. more open towards strangers than Berlin? hardly.]
Top Things to see and to do
Hannover Zoo, Herrenhäuser Gärten (ensemble of baroque garden, botanic garden and more parks), Eilenriede city forest, clubs and discos (Chez Heinz, Palo Palo, Osho[very popular...], Zaza, Glocksee, etc...), nice lakes for swimming, museums, New Town Hall (already 100 years old), Old Town Hall (even older) ...
Hildesheim 30km, cathedral, Roemer-Pelizaeus Museum etc.
Alfeld 50km, the City of Snowhite and Walter Gropius' famous Fagus Building
