Herzogenrath is a small town with about 50.000 inhabitants. It was founded in the 12th century and nowadays consists of three main parts: (from north to south) Merkstein, Herzogenrath-Mitte and Kohlscheid. (Each has it´s own centre with market-place, small shop etc.)
It´s western border is the dutch border - Kerkrade is the town´s dutch neighbour -, and the southern border is to the city of Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle).
Up to 1815, Kerkrade on the dutch side and Herzogenrath on the German have been one city, but were divided.
It´s an old coal-mining city. [As far as I know] The last coal mines were closed about a hundred years ago. But it still affects the view of the city and it´s landscape. At nearly any place you can see one of the "Kohleberge" where they made little mountains of stones they couldn´t take enough coal from. Also, you will find many older houses with cracks on their outer walls, caused by small underground-movement when underground-corridors crashed (still happing, they are busy pumping concrete into the ground to avoid dangerous crashes.)
Under WW II, many houses were destroyed and rebuilt during the following decades which causes an appearance that wouldn´t win prices as Germany´s most beautiful town. Instead, put an eye on the landscape of fields and meadows surrounding the suburb-like parts of the town and the "Naturschutzgebiet Wurmtal".
Another remnant from the war are the "tank barricades" ("Panzersperren") of concrete which should defend the western front at the end of WWII. They can be found between Kohlscheid-Bank and Pannesheide/Straß and have become a part of the meadows where cows have lunch.
Write an intro paragraph about this city/town/village. Why should members come? What can they expect, travel wise and Hospitality Club wise?
Top Things to See and Do
The geographic situation makes Herzogenrath a special place to experience European neighbourhood: Nieuwstraat/Neustraße is a street half-German, half-Dutch, driving north you´re in Germany, driving south you´re in the Netherlands. Seperated by a small wall in it´s middle in former times, it is now a road like any other in Herzogenrath or Kerkrade, connected by traffic-circles and an international business center at it´s end.
Visit Burg Rode in Herzogenrath-Mitte. It´s a kind of medieval castle.
Climb one of the coal mountains and have a view over Herzogenrath from above.
Make a bike-trip to the Netherlands.
Please just make a simple list separated by commas here - more info in the Travel Guide.
Aachen is right in the south of Herzogenrath. About 10 Minutes by train (from Herzogenrath HBF)
Maastricht, about 1 hour by train (same),
Köln (Cologne), about 1 1/2 hours
