to second: Good question!
It seems the referendum brought about a decision favouring the union with Russia
- but, as always, not everybody agrees ... so what will come of that?
Another question asked by some people - at least this is what I read - is
whether the referendum was held in a fair and proper way.
Is there anyone who knows the situation "from inside"?

Are you joking? "Referendum" will take place on Sunday. It will be very russian
fair. "Green people" with no signs on uniforms will take care of it.

Sorry, I mixed up tenses :-( We read that it will be held - "of course" - in a
fair and proper way, although what makes me wonder - like you - is that just
today I read the voters only can put a cross for "yes" ... if they don't agree,
do they put no cross at all? And then the ballot paper is declared invalid as it
has no cross on it???

I guess it doesn't matter where you put the cross. The results are already set.

the people on the streets in kiew want to go to europé, the people on the
streets in simferopol want to go to russia. why not respect that and create two
souvereign states each one garantying the rights of the minorities .
after a referendum after the war in schleswig-holstien part of it went to
denmark part of it went to germany . functioned well.
Another modell could be neutrality for all of the area of ukraina

@darpan
this sounds like a clever solution - I just wonder whether the "big players",
particularly Russia, would accept having 2 sovereign states or neutrality...
It worked with Schleswig-Holstein as all the "big players" agreed on the idea -
and, maybe, also because Germany didn't really have a say in the matter then?
So, would the rest of the Ukraine comply??
